In the collection: Door Locks
South Korean visual artist Do Ho Suh makes memories tangible with his artworks. For example, he makes replicas of homes he has lived in, in brightly coloured semi-transparent fabrics, sewn and embroidered by hand.
Do Ho Suh’s artwork Door Locks: London, New York and Seoul Homes (2020) draws attention to an unremarkable detail from these homes: the lock. Locks are small in size and often blend in unnoticed with the rest of the interior. In Door Locks, Do Ho Suh reflects on the meaning of this everyday object.
Anyone who has the key to a lock has access to the outside world and can also isolate themselves from the outside world. For Door Locks, Do Ho Suh made nine colourful copies of the locks in his former homes and studios in Seoul, New York and London. Each lock is a reference to a place where he has felt at home.
“Borders – not only national borders, but also, for example, social or political boundaries – affect everyone’s life. When I left Korea in 1991, that was when I first started thinking about it. About what it means when you don’t have a place to feel at home.”- Do Ho Suh
