In the collection: Where Are We Going
Efrat Zehavi moved from Jerusalem to Rotterdam in 2001 to study at the art academy. She fell in love with the city immediately. Efrat is fascinated by the many faces she sees around her every day. Encounters with strangers form the inspiration for her sculptures.
For Fenix, Efrat is creating a new work, entitled Where Are We Going. For this, she is modelling 116 faces of people living in Rotterdam in colourful clay. She gets to know her models during spontaneous meetings at public locations in the city, such as the park or the library.
There and then, she models the face of the person she is talking to. As she gets to know the person opposite her, the portrait takes shape. Together, the 116 portraits are a tribute to the faces that give colour to Rotterdam and form the city.
“Behind each face, there is a life story. I want to find out: where are you from? Who are you? Where are you going?”- Efrat Zehavi
